The Janesville City Council does away with an obscure rule that could have caused a sudden hurdle for a big development on the south side.

The ordinance required developers to submit detailed future plans for any vacant gas station they own before they could build a new one.

Cherek says it’s only been used one time in the last 40 plus years and that was with the redevelopment of the Kwik Trip at 1900 Center Avenue.

Cherek says there are sufficient alternative protections in place as there are several state and local regulations that address property maintenance concerns and enforce requirements unique to gas stations upon closure.
